Week 5 - No Nerves. No Matter.

Humans have nerves which send sensory information to our brains that allows us to experience all of our senses. Without nerves or a brain how can plants sense anything? Plants have machinery centers inside which are simple in action yet complex in structure. For example, a plant senses light through the tip of its leaves, then sends this information to the mid section of the plant in order for the plant to bend towards the light. It is a rather simple process yet the biology is fascinating. Plants can also sense where their elements are in relation to one another (proprioception) which is accomplished by “gravireceptors” located in their root tips and stems. Then the roots know to grow downward and the leaves to grow upward. In the following weeks I hope to learn more about the biological structures that allow plants to sense their environment.
