Week 13 - Let's Talk Nutrition

Macro/Micro

Plants will transfer macro and micro nutrients depending on what is needed. Macronutrients include, but are not limited to nitrogen, sulfur, phosphorus, magnesium, calcium, and potassium. Nitrogen, next to carbon, is the most vital element for plant survival. It is used in the composition of proteins, chlorophyll, phytohormones, etc.. (Hawkesford et al., 2011). Micronutrients are not necessary for survival per say, but are required for a plant to thrive. Iron, Zinc, Manganese, Copper, Nickel, and Chloride, are all considered to be the micronutrients of plants (Welch & Shuman, 2011). Iron, for example, helps sustain the chloroplast which is the center for photosynthesis (López-Millán et al., 2016).
