Week 4 Plant Needs

This week I continued my research in Reading What a Plant Knows by Daniel Chamovitz. One of the defining limitations plants have is that they are literally rooted to the ground, unable to move. Animals are able to protect themselves from the harsh conditions of the environment around them, by taking shelter, or hunting for food, ect... Because plants cannot get up and help themselves, they have developed advanced biological functions to aid themselves in time of trouble. This fact leads biologists to seek out how plants sensory systems have adapted for their condition. What is found is that plants have a far more complex sensory proteins and mechanisms than even humans. Chamovitz states that "plants see a much larger spectrum than we do", so that in a way the difference is made up from being anchored to the ground.
